Ranch Dressing Mix

Also known as: Hidden Valley Ranch dressing mix

A packaged, dehydrated blend of buttermilk powder, dried herbs, and spices -- typically dill, garlic, onion, and black pepper -- mixed with mayonnaise and buttermilk or a similar dairy to make ranch dressing, or sprinkled in dry as a fast way to add that same herb-and-buttermilk flavor elsewhere. The buttermilk powder is what gives finished ranch its characteristic tang, not the herbs alone.

Buying guidance

Check whether a packet is labeled dressing mix versus dip mix or seasoning -- they're formulated with different salt levels and dilution ratios, and swapping one for another without adjusting liquid can leave a dressing too thin or a dip too salty. If buying the large canister rather than single packets, measure it out rather than pouring by eye, since a canister makes it easy to over-season.

Substitutions

  • A different brand's ranch seasoning packet -- functionally interchangeable, though saltiness varies.
  • A homemade blend of dried dill, parsley, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper plus buttermilk powder -- close if a packet isn't on hand.
  • The same dried herb blend without buttermilk powder, added where buttermilk or sour cream is already in the mix -- works when only the herb flavor is needed.

Tips & common mistakes

The buttermilk powder in the mix clumps if it picks up any moisture, so scoop it with a dry spoon and keep it away from steam or wet hands -- once caked, it won't dissolve smoothly even after the clumps are broken apart. Whisk it thoroughly into cold liquid, since undissolved specks of the powder can leave a slightly gritty dressing.

Storage

Because it contains dehydrated buttermilk powder rather than just dried herbs, this mix cakes and clumps in humid conditions more readily than a plain ground spice -- a tightly sealed container matters more for this blend than for something like paprika or dried parsley.
